A few quiet things are happening around town over the next week. If you’re in the mood to step out for an hour or two, there are a couple of easy ways to do it — from a chance to look up at the night sky to a glimpse into Eastbourne’s past.

Looking up this weekend
Saturday night, if the clouds stay away, Helen Garden becomes your front row seat to the sky. The Eastbourne Astronomical Society will be setting up telescopes for anyone curious enough to wander over.
These evenings are wonderfully low-key — no expertise needed, just turn up and look. Volunteers talk you through whatever’s visible on the night — from lunar detail to bright planets or deeper-sky objects, depending on conditions. It’s weather-dependent, so it only runs if the skies behave.

Saturday 21 February · 6–8pm · Helen Garden
Free to attend — just drop by if it’s clear.

Local history talk: Motcombe Public Baths
A free talk at Eastbourne Library will explore the story of Motcombe’s former public baths — once a vital part of daily life before most homes had indoor bathrooms. Local historian Warwick Davis will share how “slipper baths” worked, why they mattered, and what they reveal about how Eastbourne has changed over time.

Wednesday 25 February · 2–3pm Free to attend, but booking is required via the library.

Guided walk — Saturday 21 February (Laughton Greenwood)
The RSPB Eastbourne & District group is running a guided woodland walk at Laughton Greenwood on Saturday 21 February.
Meet in the car park off Park Lane for a relaxed stroll through the woods. Walks usually start at 10am and last around 2.5–3 hours, are free to join, and open to all (although a small donation is appreciated).

A local group worth knowing about
There are three Eastbourne U3A groups, offering a wide range of member-run activities and interest groups — from walking and reading to games, talks and creative interests — all built around learning, curiosity and connection. Membership is about £12 a year, and you can join as many groups as you like (space permitting). It’s friendly, low-pressure, and a great way to meet people or try something new if you’re no longer in full-time work. Find out more: https://www.u3aeastbourne.org/

Looking ahead

Know something happening locally?
You’re always welcome to pass it on.

Small things matter here, they’re often the stories that connect people the most.

And, if you know someone local who'd enjoy this, feel free to pass it on.
